Most people choose a course first and work out the destination afterwards, which is the wrong way round and costs a lot of wasted effort. These guides describe what each role involves on an ordinary working day, what employers genuinely screen for, and the realistic route in — including where each path is harder than it is usually presented.

If you are not sure where to start
Read how to become a data analyst first, even if you suspect it is not where you want to end up. It is the most common entry point, the shortest path from a non-technical background, and the skills it builds — SQL, data quality judgement and stakeholder communication — are assumed by all three of the others.
A great many people reach data science or engineering by starting as an analyst and moving across internally, which faces far less competition than applying externally into a senior role you are not yet qualified for.
